Evolution Award winner Jesse Carranza escaped a dangerous lifestyle with the help of boxing and mentors

IT'S BEEN NEARLY TWO weeks since Valley native Jesse Carranza celebrated the Fourth of July by receiving the Alfred Anthony Flores Jr. Evolution Award, presented by the Communities In Schools to area youths who get a second chance to rebound from poor, early lifestyle decisions.
But neither the honor nor the meaning of the award has faded from Carranza's thoughts or his heart.

about us

Introduction

CIS Executive Director, Blinky Rodriguez has a long history of working with youth. The work became personal in 1990 when Blinky himself fell victim to gang violence. Sonny, his 16-year-old son was killed in a drive-by shooting. Rather than living in hate, through a series of meetings, he negotiated a truce, called The Valley Unity Peace Treaty, which was signed by over 75 gangs with over 1,000 members. The treaty successfully reduced gang-related deaths from 52 to 2. Along with long-time friend Bobby Arias, they have developed the unique and successful “wrap-around, integrated service delivery strategy” for youth and young adults.

We are a member of the largest nonpartisan, nonprofit organization devoted to school dropout prevention. CIS is a public/private partnership headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, supported by a variety of private businesses, foundations, individuals, as well as several federal agencies.

It is estimated that there are over 1.2 million young people in Los Angeles alone "at-risk" of not reaching productive adulthood. They face a relentless assault of negative influences that often result in drug abuse, violence, teen pregnancy, poor academic performance, even death.

Our mission is to bring the community together to address these barriers though a wide range of violence prevention, gang intervention, community empowerment, job development, and mentoring programs. Simply put, our work is aimed at helping youth and young adults develop the skills, abilities, relationships and associations necessary to foster self-esteem, persistence, perseverance and positive attitudes.

Our Mission

Our mission is to bring the community together to reduce violence, promote peace, and create safer environments for the maximum development of children and young adults at risk in their lives.

Our Vision

Our vision is to mobilize our communities at the grass roots level to influence policy, develop leaders and resources that sustain peace efforts, and provide quality education and career opportunities for all young people.
