IT'S BEEN NEARLY TWO weeks since Valley native Jesse Carranza celebrated the Fourth of July by receiving the Alfred Anthony Flores Jr. Evolution Award, presented by the Communities In Schools to area youths who get a second chance to rebound from poor, early lifestyle decisions.
But neither the honor nor the meaning of the award has faded from Carranza's thoughts or his heart.

During his speech, President Obama highlighted Communities in Schools and Big Picture Learning’s Met Center in Rhode Island as examples of programs already working to not only keep kids in school, but to help them achieve high school diplomas and envision future success. He said:

We are devoted to mobilizing the community at a grass roots level to influence policy, develop leaders and resources that sustain peace efforts and provide opportunities for all young people.

As an ongoing commitment, Communities In Schools continues to build and maintain relationships with gang oriented/affiliated youth and their families from our community. This being stated, CIS will co-host an event at Camp David Gonzalez, which will address and inform incarcerated youth on the subject of “re-entry” back into our are communities, which will inform and promote existing CIS programs (e.g. GRYD, DOJ, DOE). CIS Crisis Intervention Staff will also give a presentation regarding the lures of Drugs and Gangs. Also, this event will include “Games for Peace”, live entertainment and food, for Probation Department selected participants.

The 2009 15th Annual Hansen Dam Fourth of July Celebration has all of the wonderful “day in the park” event highlights with a very special and relevant twist. It will also be the commemoration of the 50th anniversary since the loss of hometown heroe Ritchie Valens, and rock and roll legends Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper.

It will be an unforgettable patriotic and cultural event celebrating our nations independence and honoring these musical icons.
