Communities In Schools

Tattoo Removal Program

Communities In Schools Tattoo Removal Program has been in implementation since July 2013. The program has one doctor overseeing the initiative as well as 2 nurse volunteers all trained and certified by Tri-Lase Laser company. The removal sessions are conducted twice a month. Each client receiving removal is expected to complete 45 hours of community service hours as payment for removal services. Each session costs a total of 5 community service hours. The tattoo removal program client goal is to have 40 participants as of July 2014. CIS currently has serviced 107 clients who have received removal services, of which 41 participants are currently active.

Most participants are receiving treatment on removing their gang tattoos that are on their face, neck, and hands. We also work on removing multiple tattoos on clients. One client is currently receiving treatment on over 8 different tattoos. As you can imagine, this is a life changing service, a start at a new life.  With each tattoo removed confidence is gained. Every participant is excited to move forward with their future as these tattoos have been a constant reminder of the bad choices they have made in the past and an opportunity at a new start. Each client is eager to move on with pursuing either education or a job. This service enables them to pursue school, careers, and jobs more vigilantly.

Jose Rodriguez received treatment on 8 different tattoos and has had (to date) 5 tattoo removal sessions. Jose’s most visible tattoos are on his face (3 dots), hands, wrists and on his knuckles. Jose is tired of being stared at, judged by his tattoos and does not want to have any gang tattoos on his body. He views the removal as the next step to him getting closure to employment opportunities and ultimately the beginning of his future. Jose knows that in order to pursue a job that he needs to have his tattoos removed so he can have a “chance” at a more productive life. Jose has been certified in “fork-lift” operations and is currently attending solar panel trainings with hopes to eventually be employed in the solar panel industry.

Client Erick Espionza a reformed ex- gang member has had 4 different tattoos removed with a total of 13 removal sessions. Erick’s most visible tattoo is the 5150 that he has beneath his eye. Eric has had a hard time finding employment due to his tattoos. Eric is a dedicated father and a very determined young man who is eager to be a productive member of society. With each removal session behind him you can see the excitement of “the possibility” of a new found future. Eric is currently being case managed through the GRYD initiative and is participating in various employment trainings at CIS. He is soon to be “forklift” certified and is eager to move forward with his future.
